Free copyright training for ALCC members – Sydney 16 April

‘Get your collections out there: understanding the copyright framework around online collections’ follows on from last year’s ALCC training, which tackled the copyright basics. This year’s training aims to demystify copyright law for librarians looking to promote collections online, and help staff develop risk management guidelines for using copyright works. We’ll be looking at copyright law and digitisation of library material, using social media platforms like Pinterest, Tumblr, Flickr, Facebook and Twitter, new digital history tools that enable new ways of experiencing collections and managing copyright permissions on acquisition or deposit of works into a library.

‘The internet has profoundly altered the ways in which consumers are able to access information, in an age of information abundance (and occasional overload!).  How to appropriately protect copyright works online without impeding fair access to information and community participation is a hot topic around the world. In domestic policy making, industry collaboration, international treaties and trade agreements, governments are looking at frameworks for copyright content in a digital age, and libraries have been playing an essential role in the conversation.

Following ALCC members copyright training, Ellen Broad will talk about recent developments with an impact on libraries providing access to information online, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP), World Intellectual Property Organisations discussions on exceptions for libraries and archives, e-book lending, digital rights management and digital libraries.
