Submission to the Senate Select Committee on COVID-19

21 Jul 2020

Closures of libraries and archives in response to the COVID-19 pandemic saw demand for online services skyrocket which exposed the inadequacy of our copyright system to cope with digital delivery of public assets.

We made a submission to the Senate Select Committee on COVID-19 inquiry into the Australian Government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic detailing copyright related impacts on libraries and archives during lockdown.

Given the situation during lockdown and with the looming possibility of more closures to come, we call on the government to progress long-overdue amendments to the Copyright Act 1968 to improve the ability of libraries and archives to continue to provide their services online in response to this and future emergencies.
