Submission in response to the Inquiry into the National Cultural Policy

The Australian Libraries and Archives Copyright Coalition recognises the work undertaken since the first Inquiry into the National Cultural Policy and recommends further focus on copyright law reform, legal and ethical access to Australian data for researchers while recognising the costs and concerns of AI tools.

Our submission in response to the Environment and Communications References Committee Inquiry into the National Cultural Policy. Given the rapid development of AI and the complex issues that have arisen because of it, we support a robust conversation around the opportunities and challenges of AI to ensure a fair and balanced regulatory response. Australia’s libraries and archives are cognisant of the potential benefits provided by AI technologies for Australian business, research and the economy. We argue that the government should continue to pursue copyright law reform that takes into account the challenges that have arisen with the rise of AI.
