Two flowcharts to help you determine the copyright term of materials under the new rules introduced in 2019.
Australia’s laws around the duration of copyright were simplified and clarified by the Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and Other Measures) Act 2017.
The new rules came into effect on 1 January 2019, and particularly make changes for unpublished materials and orphaned works.
The flowcharts below will help you apply the new rules to materials in your collection. However, note that these just spell out the general rules since 1 January. The terms of some categories of older works, such as photographs and pre-1969 films, may be affected by other changes that have been made previously.
For the full details of the 2019 copyright term changes, see our Guide to the Copyright Amendment (Disability Access and Other Measures) Act 2017.
